He was already a star Mexican painter while she was but a student of art, in 1927 when they met; she took some of her work for him to see, and he liked it. From then on they were in a turbulent and mainly unhappy relationship, that was on the other hand incredibly symbiotic. They both had affairs, Frida with both sexes and Diego with countless women including Frida’s own sister. However, although this all led to divorce of 1939 - they remarried within a year and remained married until her death in 1954. Diego later said July 13, 1954 was the most tragic day of my life. I had lost my beloved Frida forever. To late now I realized that the most wonderful part of my life had been my love for Frida..

For decades after her death Frida was virtually unknown, or rather - known solely as Diego’s wife. This however changed after the emergence of what is now called Neomexicanismo, when she was rediscovered. Today she is far better known than Diego, one of the best known artists in the world.
